SPITALFIELDS , a See also:

district of See also:London, See also:England, in the western See also:part of the See also:metropolitan See also:borough of See also:Stepney. The name is derived from the fact that the See also:land belonged to a priory of St See also:Mary Spital, founded in 1197. Excavations have revealed a See also:Roman See also:burial-See also:place here. The name is well known in connexion with the See also:silk See also:industry established here by See also:French refugees after the revocation of the See also:Edict of See also:Nantes, in 1685.mainland (the See also:coast of See also:Hampshire, England) and the See also:north-eastern coast of the Isle of See also:Wight, forming the eastern entrance to See also:Southampton See also:Water, the See also:Solent being the western. Its length is about 12 m., and its See also:general breadth about 4 m., though the distance between See also:Ryde and Gilkicker Point is almost exactly 3 M. The See also:Spit See also:Sand, extending See also:south-See also:east from this promontory, gives name to the strait. On the north See also:side opens the narrow entry to See also:Portsmouth See also:Harbour, with the towns of Portsmouth and See also:Gosport east and See also:west of it. On the south the coast of Wight rises sharply though to no See also:great See also:elevation; it is well wooded, and studded with See also:country residences. Here is also the favourite watering-place of Ryde. Spithead, which as an anchorage is exposed only to the south-east, shares in the fortifications of Portsmouth Harbour, the See also:principal station of the See also:British See also:navy. In this connexion the strait has been the See also:scene of many splendid See also:naval pageants, such as those attendant upon the See also:jubilee in 1897, and the funeral in 1901 of See also:Queen See also:Victoria, and that which celebrated the See also:coronation of See also:King See also:Edward VII. on the 16th of See also:August 1902.
