AMERSFOORT , a See also:

town in the See also:province of See also:Utrecht, See also:Holland, on the navigable Eem, and a junction station 14 M. by See also:rail N.E. by E. of Utrecht. Pop. (1900) 19,089. It is situated in the midst of picturesque and undulating See also:country, consisting of wide sandy heaths and See also:woods, and dotted with many See also:fine country houses. One of the most interesting of its few historic monuments is the Koppelpoort, an old gateway situated at the end of a fine See also:avenue of trees bordering the See also:canal. See also:Close by is a lofty See also:Gothic See also:tower (rsoo), which belonged to the See also:ancient See also:church of St See also:Mary, which was wrecked by an See also:explosion of See also:gunpowder in 1787. The large See also:plain church of St See also:George See also:dates from the first See also:half of the 13th See also:century. There is also a Jansenist church, to which a See also:seminary is attached. Besides these there are a town See also:hall, a See also:court of See also:primary See also:jurisdiction, See also:industrial and other See also:schools. Amersfoort has a large See also:garrison, consisting chiefly of See also:artillery, and manufactures woollen goods, See also:cotton, See also:silk, See also:glass and See also:brandy. It has also a considerable See also:trade in See also:tobacco, grown in the neighbourhood, and in See also:corn and See also:fish.
