It is intersected by the See also:river See also:Barrow, which is here crossed by a See also:bridge of five See also:arches. The See also:crossing of the river here was guarded and disputed from the earliest times, and', the name of the town is derived from a See also:king of See also:Munster killed here in the 2nd See also:century. There are picturesque remains of See also:Woodstock See also:Castle of the 12th or 13th century, and See also:White Castle built in 15o6, and rebuilt in 1575 by a member of the See also:family whose name it bears, and still occupied. Both were erected to defend the See also:ford of the Barrow. There are also an old town See also:gate, and an See also:ancient See also:cemetery with slight monastic remains. Previous to the See also:Union Athy returned two members to the Irish See also:parliament. The See also:trade, chiefly in See also:grain, is aided by excellent See also:water communication, by a branch of the See also:Grand See also:Canal to Dublin, and by the river Barrow, navigable from here to See also:Waterford See also:harbour.
