He took See also:priest's orders, from which, however, he was finally released by the See also:pope in 18o1. In 1794 he became a member of the temporary See also:commission of the arts, and was charged with the See also:duty of distributing among the various See also:libraries of See also:Paris the books that had been confiscated during the Revolution. In the See also:execution of this task he discovered the letters of See also:Huet, See also:bishop of See also:Avranches, and the See also:MSS. of the See also:works of See also:Fenelon. He became librarian successively to the See also:Directory, to the Conseil d'Etat, and in 1807 to See also:Napoleon, from whom he carried out a number of commissions. He produced a See also:standard See also:work in his Dictionnaire See also:des ouvrages anonymes et pseudonymes (4 vols., 1806–1809; 3rd edition 1872–1879). Only the first See also:part of his Examen critique des dictionnaires historiques (182o) was published. He had a See also:share in the See also:foundation of the libraries of the Louvre, of See also:Fontainebleau, of See also:Compiegne and See also:Saint-See also:Cloud; under See also:Louis XVIII. he became See also:administrator of the See also:king's private libraries, but in 1822 he was deprived of all his offices. Barbier died in Paris on the 5th of See also:December 1825. See also a See also:notice by his son, Louis Barbier, and a See also:list of his works prefixed to the 3rd edition of the Dict. des ouvrages anonymes et pseudonymes.
