After serving as a surgeon in the French See also:army and studying under J. N. Corvisart at See also:Paris, See also:lie accompanied A. von See also:Humboldt during five years of travel in See also:Mexico, See also:Colombia and the districts bordering on the See also:Orinoco and See also:Amazon. In these explorations he collected and classified about 6000 See also:plants till then mostly unknown in See also:Europe, which he afterwards described in Plantes equinoxiales, &c. (Paris, 1808-1816). On returning to Paris he received a See also:pension and the superintendence of the gardens at Malmaison, and published Monographic See also:des Melastomees (1806), and Description des plantes rares de See also:Navarre (1813). In 1816 he set out, taking with him various See also:European plants, for Buenos Aires, where he was elected See also:professor of natural See also:history, an See also:office which he soon quitted in See also:order to explore central See also:South See also:America. While journeying to See also:Bolivia he was arrested in 1821, by command of Dr See also:Francia, the See also:dictator of See also:Paraguay, who detained him until 1831. On regaining See also:liberty he resided at See also:San See also:Borga in the See also:province of See also:Corrientes, until his removal in 1853 to See also:Santa See also:Anna, where he died on the 4th of May 1858.
