BORGA (Finnish Porvoo) , a seaport in the See also:province of Nyland, See also:grand duchy of See also:Finland, situated at the entrance of the See also:river Borg& into the Gulf of Finland, about 33 M. by See also:rail N.W. of See also:Helsingfors. Pop. (181o) 1693; (1870) 3478; (1904) 5255. It is the seat of a Lutheran bishopric which extends over the provinces of See also:Viborg and St See also:Michel with portions of See also:Tavastehus and Nyland; it possesses a beautiful See also:cathedral, and a high school (where the well-known Finnish poet See also:Runeberg lectured for many years), and is the seat of a See also:court of See also:appeal. The See also:weaving of See also:sail-See also:cloth and the manufacture of See also:tobacco are the See also:principal See also:industries, and the See also:chief articles of See also:trade are See also:wood, See also:butter and furs. Borg& was once a See also:city of See also:great dignity and importance, but the rapid growth of Helsingfors has somewhat eclipsed it. In 1809, when the estates of Finland were summoned to a See also:special See also:diet to decide the future of the See also:country, Borg& was the See also:place of See also:meeting, and it was in the cathedral that the See also:emperor See also:Alexander I. pledged himself as grand See also:duke' of Finland to maintain the constitution and liberties of the grand duchy.
