In 1878 he was called to the See also:bar, and became a leading lawyer in his native See also:province. In 1896 he was elected to the Canadian See also:parliament for the See also:city of See also:Halifax, but later lost his seat there and was elected for Carlton. In See also:February 19o1, on the resignation of See also:Sir See also:Charles See also:Tupper, he became See also:leader of the Conservative opposition. At the See also:general See also:election of 1908 he was returned again for Halifax.
