He was a newspaper correspondent during the Franco-See also:German See also:War, and during the See also:Commune acted as See also:staff-officer in the See also:National Guard. In 1885 he became director of the Theatre Frangais, and from that See also:time devoted his time chiefly to its See also:administration. He was elected a member of the See also:Academy in 1888, and took his seat in Feburary 1889, being received by Ernest See also:Renan. (1887), a novel of contemporary See also:life; Brichanteau, comedien francais (1896); several plays, some of which are based on novels of his own—Les Muscadins(1874) , Le See also:Regiment de See also:Champagne(1877), See also:Les See also:Mirabeau (1879), See also:Monsieur le ministre (1883), and others; and the See also:opera, La Navarraise, based on his novel La Cigarette, and written with See also:Henri See also:Cain to the See also:music of See also:Massenet. La Navarraise was first produced at Covent See also:Garden (See also:June 1894) with Mme See also:Calve in the See also:part of Anita. His Euvres completes were published in 1897-1904.
