DARWEN , a municipal See also:

borough in the Darwen See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Lancashire, See also:England, 20 M. N.W. from See also:Manchester by the Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire railway. Pop. (1891) 34,1.92; (1901) 38,212. It lies on the See also:river Darwen, which traverses a densely populated manufacturing See also:district, and is surrounded by high-lying See also:moors. Darwen is a centre of the See also:cotton See also:trade and has also blast furnaces, and See also:paper-making, paper-staining and See also:fire-See also:clay See also:works. In the neighbourhood are collieries and See also:stone quarries. The See also:market See also:hall is the See also:chief public See also:building; there are technical See also:schools, a See also:free library, and two public parks. Darwen was incorporated in 1788. The See also:corporation consists of a See also:mayor, six aldermen and eighteen councillors.
