Helsingor received town-privileges in 1425. In 1522 it was taken and burnt by See also:Lubeck, but in 1535 was retaken by See also:Christian II. It is celebrated as the Elsinore of See also:Shakespeare's tragedy of See also:Hamlet, and was the birthplace of Saxo Grammaticus, from whose See also:history the See also:story of Hamlet is derived. A See also:pile of rocks surrounded by trees is shown as the See also:grave of Hamlet, and Ophelia's See also:brook is also pointed out, but both are, of course, inventions. On a See also:tongue of See also:land east of the town stands the See also:castle of Kronberg or See also:Kronenberg, a magnificent, solid and See also:venerable See also:Gothic structure built by See also:Frederick II. towards the end of the 16th See also:century, and extensively restored by Christian IV. after a See also:fire in 1637. It was taken by the Swedes in 1658, but its See also:possession was again given up to the Danes in 166o. From its turrets, one of which serves as a lighthouse, there are See also:fine views of the straits and of the neighbouring countries. The See also:Flag See also:Battery is the " See also:platform before the castle " where the See also:ghost appears in Hamlet. Within it the See also:principal See also:object of See also:interest is the apartment in which See also:Matilda, See also:queen of Christian VII. and See also:sister of See also:George III. of See also:England, was imprisoned before she was taken to See also:Hanover. The See also:chapel contains fine See also:wood-See also:carving of the 17th century.
