ELSINORE (See also:Dan. Helsingor) , a seaport of See also:Denmark in the amt (See also:county) of Frederiksborg, on the See also:east See also:coast of the See also:island of See also:Zealand, 28 m. N. of See also:Copenhagen by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) 13,902. It stands at the narrowest See also:part of the See also:Sound, opposite the See also:Swedish See also:town of See also:Helsingborg, 3 M. distant. Communication is maintained by means of a See also:steam See also:ferry. Its See also:harbour admits vessels of 20 ft. See also:draught, and the roadstead affords excellent anchorage. There are See also:shipbuilding yards, with foundry, See also:engineering shops, &c.; the See also:chief export is agricultural produce; imports, See also:iron, See also:coal, cereals and See also:yarn. Helsingor received town-privileges in 1425. In 1522 it was taken and burnt by See also:Lubeck, but in 1535 was retaken by See also:Christian II. It is celebrated as the Elsinore of See also:Shakespeare's tragedy of See also:Hamlet, and was the birthplace of Saxo Grammaticus, from whose See also:history the See also:story of Hamlet is derived.

It was taken by the Swedes in 1658, but its See also:possession was again given up to the Danes in 166o. From its turrets, one of which serves as a lighthouse, there are See also:fine views of the straits and of the neighbouring countries. The See also:Flag See also:Battery is the " See also:platform before the castle " where the See also:ghost appears in Hamlet. Within it the See also:principal See also:object of See also:interest is the apartment in which See also:Matilda, See also:queen of Christian VII. and See also:sister of See also:George III. of See also:England, was imprisoned before she was taken to See also:Hanover. The See also:chapel contains fine See also:wood-See also:carving of the 17th century. See also:North-See also:west of the town is Marienlyst, originally a royal See also:chateau, but now a seaside resort.
