HELSINGBORG , a seaport of See also:

Sweden in the See also:district (ldn) of Malmohus, 35 M. N. by E. of See also:Copenhagen by See also:rail and See also:water. Pop. (1900), 24,670. It is beautifully situated at the narrowest See also:part of Oresund, or the See also:Sound, here only 3 M. wide, opposite Helsingor (See also:Elsinore) in See also:Denmark. Above the See also:town the See also:brick See also:tower of a former See also:castle crowns a See also:hill, commanding a See also:fine view over the Sound. On the outskirts are the Oresund See also:Park, gardens containing iodide and bromide springs, and frequented See also:sea-See also:baths. On the See also:coast to the See also:north is the royal chdleau of Sofiero; to the See also:south, the small See also:spa of Ramlosa. A See also:system of electric trams is maintained. North and See also:east of Helsingborg lies the only See also:coal-See also:field in Sweden, extending into the lofty Kullen See also:peninsula, which forms the See also:northern part of the east See also:shore of the Sound. See also:Potter's See also:clay is also found. Helsingborg ranks among the first manufacturing towns of Sweden, having See also:copper See also:works, using ore from See also:Sulitelma in See also:Norway, See also:india-See also:rubber works and breweries.

The artificial See also:

harbour has a See also:depth of 24 ft., and there are extensive docks. The See also:chief exports are See also:timber, See also:butter and See also:iron. The town is the headquarters of the first See also:army See also:division. The See also:original site of the town is marked by the tower of the old fortress, which is first mentioned in 1135. In the 14th See also:century it was several times besieged. From 1370 along with other towns in the See also:province of Skane, it was See also:united for fifteen years with the Hanseatic See also:League. The fortress was destroyed by See also:fire in 1418, and about 1425 See also:Eric XIII. built another near the sea, and caused the town to be transported thither, bestowing upon it important privileges. Until 1658 it belonged to Denmark, and it was again occupied by the Danes in 1676 and 1677. In 1684 its fortifications were dismantled. It was taken by See also:Frederick IV. of Denmark in See also:November 1709, but on the 28th of See also:February 1710 the Danes were defeated in the neighbourhood, and the town came finally into the See also:possession of Sweden, though in 1711 it was again bombarded by the Danes. A tablet on the See also:quay commemorates the landing of Bernadotte after his See also:election as successor to the See also:throne in 181o.
