ESKILSTUNA , a See also:

town of See also:Sweden in the See also:district (lan) of Sddermanland, on the Hjelmar See also:river, which unites lakes Hjelmar and See also:Malar, 65 m. W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 13,663. The See also:place is mentioned in the 13th See also:century, and is said to derive its name from Eskil, an See also:English missionary who suffered martyrdom on the spot. It See also:rose into importance in the reign of See also:Charles X., who bestowed on-it considerable privileges, and gave the first impulse to its manufacturing activity. It is the See also:chief seat in Sweden of the See also:iron and See also:steel See also:industries, its See also:cutlery being especially noted, while damascened See also:work is a specialty. There is a technical school for the See also:metal industries. There are, in the town or its neighbourhood, See also:great See also:engineering, See also:gun-making, and See also:rolling and polishing See also:works and breweries. The largest See also:mechanical works are those of Munktell and Tunafors. The Karl Gustaf Stads See also:rifle factory was established in 1814.
