FRANEKER , a See also:

town in the See also:province of See also:Friesland, See also:Holland, 5 M. E. of See also:Harlingen on the railway and See also:canal to See also:Leeuwarden. Pop. (19o0) 7187. It was at one See also:time a favourite See also:residence of the Frisian See also:nobility, many of whom had their castles here, and it possessed a celebrated university, founded by the Frisian estates in 1585. This was suppressed by See also:Napoleon I. in 1811, and the endowments were diverted four years later to the support of an See also:athenaeum, and afterwards of a gymnasium, with which a physiological See also:cabinet and a botanical See also:garden are connected. Franeker also possesses a town See also:hall (1591), which contains a planetarium, made by one Eise Eisinga in 1774-1881. The See also:fine See also:observatory was founded about 1780. The See also:church of St See also:Martin (1420) contains several fine tombs of the 15th-17th centuries. The See also:industries of the town include See also:silk-See also:weaving, woollen-See also:spinning, See also:shipbuilding and pottery-making. It is also a considerable See also:market for agricultural produce.
