See also:FREIDANK (VRIDANC) , the name by which a See also:Middle High See also:German didactic poet of the See also:early 13th See also:century is known. It has been disputed whether the word, which is See also:equivalent to " See also:free-thought," is to be regarded as the poet's real name or only as a See also:pseudonym; the latter is probably the See also:case. Little is known of Freidank's See also:life. He accompanied See also:Frederick II. on his crusade to the See also:Holy See also:Land, where, in the years 1228-1229, a portion at least of his See also:work was composed; and it is said that on his See also:tomb (if indeed it was not the tomb of another Freidank) at Treviso there was inscribed, with allusion to the See also:character of his See also:style, " he always spoke and never sang." Wilhelm See also:Grimm originated the See also:hypothesis that Freidank was to be identified with See also:Walther von der Vogelweide; but this is no longer tenable. Freidank's work bears the name of Bescheidenheit, i.e. " See also:practical See also:wisdom," " correct See also:judgment," and consists of a collection of See also:proverbs, pithy sayings, and moral and satirical reflections, arranged under See also:general heads. Its popularity till the end of the 16th century is shown by the See also:great number of See also:MSS. extant. See also:Sebastian See also:Brant published the Bescheidenheit in a modified See also:form in 15o8. Wilhelm Grimm's edition appeared in 1834 (2nd ed. 1860), H. F. Bezzenberger's in 1872. A later edition is by F. Sandvoss (1877). The old Latin See also:translation, Fridangi Discretio, was printed by C. Lemcke in 1868; and there are two See also:translations into See also:modern German, A. Bacmeister's (1861) and K. See also:Simrock's (1867). See also F. See also:Pfeiffer, Ober Freidank (Zur deutschen Literaturgeschichte, 1855), and H. See also:Paul, Ober See also:die urspriingliche Anordnung von Freidanks Bescheidenheit (1870).
