When the duke ascended the Danish See also:throne as Frederick III., Gabel followed him to See also:Copenhagen as his private secretary and See also:man of business. During the brief See also:interval between King See also:Charles X.'s first and second attack upon See also:Denmark, Gabel was employed in several See also:secret See also:missions to See also:Sweden; and he took a See also:part in the intrigues which resulted in the autocratic revolution of 166o (see *DENMARK: See also:History). His services on this occasion have certainly been exaggerated; but if not the originator of the revolution, he was certainly the See also:chief intermediary between Frederick III. and the conjoined Estates in the mysterious See also:conspiracy which established See also:absolutism in Denmark. His activity on this occasion won the king's lifelong gratitude. He was enriched, ennobled, and in 1664 made See also:governor of Copenhagen. From this See also:year must be dated his open and See also:official influence and See also:power, and from 166o to 167o he was the most considerable personage at court, and very largely employed in financial and See also:diplomatic affairs. When Frederick III. died, in See also:February 1670, Gabel's power was at an end. The new ruler, See also:Christian V., hated him, and accusations against him poured in from every See also:quarter. When, on the 18th of See also:April 167o, he was dismissed, nobody sympathized with the man who had grown wealthy at a See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf.
