Annaeus Seneca the philosopher, was See also:born at Corduba (See also:Cordova) about the beginning of the See also:Christian era. At See also:Rome he was adopted by L. Junius Gallio, a rhetorician of some repute, from whom he took the name of Junius Gallio. His brother Seneca, who dedicated to him the See also:treatises De Ira and De Vita Beata, speaks of the See also:charm of his disposition, also alluded to by the poet See also:Statius (Silvae, ii. 7, 32). It is probable that he was banished to See also:Corsica with his brother, and that both returned together to Rome when See also:Agrippina selected Seneca to be See also:tutor to See also:Nero. Towards the See also:close of the reign of See also:Claudius, Gallio was proconsul of the newly constituted senatorial See also:province of See also:Achaea, but seems to have been compelled by See also:ill-See also:health to resign the See also:post within a few years. During his See also:tenure of See also:office (in 53) he dismissed the See also:charge brought by the See also:Jews against the apostle See also:Paul (Acts xviii.). His behaviour on this occasion (" But Gallio cared for none of these things ") shows the impartial attitude of the See also:Roman officials towards See also:Christianity in its See also:early days. He survived his brother Seneca, but was subsequently put to See also:death by See also:order of Nero (in 65) or committed See also:suicide.
