He was educated at the See also:universities of See also:Aberdeen, See also:Oxford and See also:Gottingen, and was a See also:fellow of See also:Exeter See also:College, Oxford (1882; honorary fellow 1898), and See also:Lincoln College (1885; honorary 1899). In 1885 he was elected See also:professor of classical See also:art at Oxford, and in the next See also:year professor of humanity at Aberdeen. From 1880 onwards he travelled widely in See also:Asia See also:Minor and rapidly became the re-cognized authority on all matters See also:relating to the districts associated with St See also:Paul's missionary journeys and on See also:Christianity in the See also:early See also:Roman See also:Empire. He received the honorary degrees of D.C.L. Oxford, LL.D. St See also:Andrews and See also:Glasgow, D.D. See also:Edinburgh, and was knighted in 1906. He was elected a member of learned See also:societies in See also:Europe and See also:America, and has been awarded medals by the Royal See also:Geographical Society, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and the University of See also:Pennsylvania.
