GEORGE See also:JAMES See also:HOWARD , 9th See also:earl, See also:born in 1843, was the son of See also:Charles, See also:fourth son of the 6th earl. He was educated at See also:Eton and Trinity, See also:Cambridge, and, then being only Mr Howard, married in 1864 Rosalind, daughter of the 2nd See also:Lord See also:Stanley of Alderley. He sat in See also:parliament as a Liberal in 1879-188o, and again from 1881 to 1885; and succeeded his See also:uncle in the See also:peerage in 1889. His wife, a more active Liberal politician than himself, took a prominent See also:part in the See also:temperance See also:movement and other advanced causes; and Lord See also:Carlisle became best known as an See also:art See also:patron and an artist of considerable ability, whose landscape See also:painting had considerable See also:affinity to the See also:work of Giovanni See also:Costa. His position as a connoisseur was recognized by his being made one of the trustees of the See also:National See also:Gallery. His son, See also:Viscount See also:Morpeth (b. 1867), had a distinguished career at See also:Oxford, and after various defeats in other constituencies was returned to parliament for See also:South See also:Birmingham as a Unionist supporter of Mr See also:Chamberlain in 1904.
