GERLACHE, See also:ETIENNE CONSTANTIN, See also:BARON DE (1785 r871), Belgian politician and historian, was See also:born at Biourge, See also:Luxemburg, on the 24th of See also:December 1785. He studied See also:law in See also:Paris and practised there for some See also:time, but settled at See also:Liege after the See also:establishment of the See also:kingdom of the See also:Netherlands. As member of the states-See also:general he was an energetic member of the opposition, and, though he repudiated an ultramontane policy, he supported the See also:alliance of the extreme Catholics with the Liberal party, which paved the way for the revolution of 183o. On the outbreak of disturbance in See also:August 1830 he still, however, thought the See also:Orange-See also:Nassau See also:dynasty and the See also:union with the Dutch states essential; but his views changed, and, after holding various offices in the provisional See also:government, he became See also:president of See also:congress, and brought forward the See also:motion inviting See also:Leopold of See also:Saxe-See also:Coburg to become See also:king of the Belgians. In 1832 he was president of the chamber of representatives, and for See also:thirty-five years he presided over the See also:court of See also:appeal. He presided over the See also:Catholic congresses held at See also:Malines between 1863 and 1867. That his See also:early Liberal views underwent some modification is See also:plain from the Conservative principles enunciated in his Essai sur le mouvement See also:des partis en Belgique (See also:Brussels, 1852). As an historian his See also:work was strongly coloured by his See also:anti-Dutch prejudices and his Catholic predilections. His Histoire des Pays-Bas depuis 1814 jusqu'en 183o (Brussels, 2 vols., 1839), which reached a See also:fourth edition in 1875, was a piece of See also:special See also:pleading against the Dutch domination. The most important of his other See also:works were his Histoire de Liege (Brussels, 1843) and his Etudes sur Salluste et sur quelques-uns des principaux historiens de l'antiquite (Brussels, 1847). A See also:complete edition of his works (6 vols., Brussels, 1874–1875) contains a See also:biography by M. Thonissen.
