GORBODUC , a mythical See also:

king of See also:Britain. He gave his See also:kingdom away during his lifetime to his two sons, Ferrex and Porrex. The two quarrelled and the younger stabbed the See also:elder. Their See also:mother, loving the latter most, avenged his See also:death by murdering her son, and the See also:people, horrified at her See also:act, revolted and murdered both her and King Gorboduc. This See also:legend was the subject of the earliest See also:regular See also:English tragedy which in 1561 was played before See also:Queen See also:Elizabeth in the Inner See also:Temple See also:hall. It was written by See also:Thomas See also:Sackville, See also:Lord Buckhurst and Thomas See also:Norton in collaboration. Under the See also:title of Gorboduc it was published first very corruptly in 1565, and in better See also:form as The Tragedy of Ferrex and Porrex in 1570.
