A member of See also:parliament and courtier under See also:Henry VIII., Richard Sackville became See also:chancellor of the See also:court of augmentations in 1548 and was knighted in 1549. He amassed a See also:great See also:deal of See also:wealth, and Sir See also:Robert See also:Naunton said his name should be. " fill-See also:sack," rather than " Sack-ville." He was on friendly terms with See also:Roger See also:Ascham, whom he advised to write his Scholemaster. In 1604 his son See also:Thomas was created See also:earl of See also:Dorset, and from him the earls and See also:dukes of Dorset (q.v.) of the Sackville See also:family were descended. Mortimer Sackville-West was a younger son of See also:George See also:John Sackville-West, 5th Earl de la Warr (See DE LA WARR) : his See also:mother, See also:Elizabeth, Baroness Buckhurst, being a daughter of John See also:Frederick Sackville, 3rd See also:duke of Dorset. When in 1873 his See also:elder See also:brother, Reginald See also:Windsor, became 7th Earl de la Warr, Mortimer succeeded by arrangement to, the extensive estates of the Sackvilles, including Knole See also:Park, their beautiful Kentish See also:residence, which had come to his family through his mother. In 1876 he was created Baron Sackville of Knole, and died on the 1st of See also:October 1888. His brother, LIONEL SACKVILLE-WEST (1827-1908), succeeded as 2nd baron. He had a See also:long career in the See also:diplomatic service. From 1872 to 1878 he was See also:ambassador to the See also:Argentine See also:Republic; from 1878 to 1881 he represented his See also:country at See also:Madrid, and from 1881 to 1888 at See also:Washington. His retirement was due to an unfortunate interference in See also:American domestic politics, or what was taken as such, which caused some stir.

He died in See also:

September 1908 and was succeeded by his See also:nephew Lionel See also:Edward (b. 1867) as 3rd baron. By a See also:Spanish dancer, Josefa See also:Duran de Ortega, known also as Pepita de See also:Oliva, Mr Sackville-West, as the and baron then was, had several See also:children, and soon after his See also:death one of these, calling himself Ernest See also:Henri See also:Jean See also:Baptiste Sackville-West, claimed to be a lawful son and his See also:father's See also:heir. He asserted that between 1863 and 1867 Sackville-West had married his mother. The See also:case came before the See also:English courts of See also:law in 1909-1910, and it was decided that the children of this, See also:union were all illegitimate, as Pepita's See also:husband, Jean See also:Antonio See also:Gabriel de Oliva, was alive during the whole See also:period of his wife's connexion with Sackville-West.
