In 1851 he was appointed See also:advocate-See also:general of that See also:colony and took an active See also:share in the passing of many important See also:measures, such as the first See also:Education See also:Act, the See also:District See also:Councils Act of 1852, and the Act of 1856 which granted constitutional See also:government to the colony. In 1856 and again from 1857 to 186o he was See also:attorney-general and See also:leader of the government. In 1861 he was appointed chief justice of the supreme See also:court of South Australia and was knighted in 1869.
