HERNOSAND , a seaport of See also:

Sweden, See also:chief See also:town of the See also:district (lan) of Vesternorrland on the Gulf of See also:Bothnia. Pop. (19oo) 789o. It stands on the' See also:island of Herno (which is connected with the mainland by See also:bridges) near the mouth of the Angerman See also:river, 423 M. N. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail. It is the seat of a See also:bishop and possesses a See also:fine See also:cathedral. There are See also:engine-See also:works, See also:timber-yards and saw-See also:mills. The See also:harbour is See also:good, but generally See also:ice-See also:bound from See also:December to May. Timber, See also:iron and See also:wood-pulp are exported. There are a school of See also:navigation and an See also:institute for See also:pisciculture. Hernosand was founded in 1584, and received itsfirst town-privileges from See also:John III. in 1587. It was the first town in See also:Europe to be lighted by See also:electricity (1885).
