JAGERNDORF (See also:Czech, Krnov) , a See also:town of See also:Austria, in See also:Silesia, 18 m. N.W. of See also:Troppau by See also:rail. Pop. (1900), 14,675, mostly See also:German. It is situated on the Oppa and possesses a See also:chateau belonging to See also:Prince See also:Liechtenstein, who holds extensive estates in the See also:district. Jagerndorf has large manufactories of See also:cloth, woollens, See also:linen and See also:machines, and carries on an active See also:trade. On the neighbouring See also:hill of Burgberg (1420 ft.) are a See also:church, much visited as a See also:place of See also:pilgrimage, and the ruins of the seat of the former princes of Jagerndorf. The claim of See also:Prussia to the principality of Jagerndorf was the occasion of the first Silesian See also:war (1740-1742), but in the See also:partition, which followed, Austria retained the larger portion of it. Jagerndorf suffered severely during the See also:Thirty Years' War, and was the See also:scene of engagements between the Prussians and Austrians in May 1745 and in See also:January 1779.
