The See also:chief natural See also:wealth of Kadur is in its forests, which contain inexhaustible supplies of the finest See also:timber, especially See also:teak, and also furnish shelter for the See also:coffee plantations. See also:Iron is found and smelted at the See also:foot of the hills, and See also:corundum exists in certain localities. See also:Wild beasts and See also:game are numerous, and See also:fish are abundant.
The largest See also:town is Tarikere (pop. 10,164); the headquarters are at Chikmagalur (9515). The See also:staple See also:crop is See also:rice, chiefly grown on the hill slopes, where the natural rainfall is sufficient, or in the river valley, where the See also:fields can be irrigated. Coffee cultivation is said to have been introduced by a See also:Mahommedan See also:saint, Baba Budan, more than two centuries ago; but it first attracted See also:European See also:capital in 1840.
