KADUR , a See also:

district of See also:Mysore See also:state, in See also:southern See also:India, with an See also:area of 2813 sq. m. Pop. (1901), 362,752, showing an increase of 9% in the See also:decade. The larger portion of the district consists of the Malnad or See also:hill See also:country, which contains some of the wildest See also:mountain scenery in southern India. The western frontier is formed by the See also:chain of the See also:Ghats, of which the highest peaks are the Kudremukh (6215 ft.) and the Meruti Gudda (5451 ft.). The centre is occupied by the See also:horse-See also:shoe range of the Baba Budans, containing the loftiest mountain in Mysore, Mulaingiri (6317 ft.). The See also:Maidan or See also:plain country lying beneath the See also:amphitheatre formed by the Baba Budan hills is a most fertile region, well watered, and with the famous " See also:black See also:cotton See also:soil." The See also:principal See also:rivers are the Tunga and Bhadra, which rise near each other in the Ghats, and unite to See also:form the See also:Tungabhadra, a tributary of the See also:Kistna. The eastern region is watered by the Vedavati. At the point where this See also:river leaves the Baba Budan hills it is embanked to form two extensive tanks which irrigate the See also:lower valley. From all the rivers See also:water is See also:drawn off into See also:irrigation channels by means of anicuts or weirs. The See also:chief natural See also:wealth of Kadur is in its forests, which contain inexhaustible supplies of the finest See also:timber, especially See also:teak, and also furnish shelter for the See also:coffee plantations. See also:Iron is found and smelted at the See also:foot of the hills, and See also:corundum exists in certain localities.

Wild beasts and See also:game are numerous, and See also:fish are abundant. The largest See also:town is Tarikere (pop. 10,164); the headquarters are at Chikmagalur (9515). The See also:staple See also:crop is See also:rice, chiefly grown on the hill slopes, where the natural rainfall is sufficient, or in the river valley, where the See also:fields can be irrigated. Coffee cultivation is said to have been introduced by a See also:Mahommedan See also:saint, Baba Budan, more than two centuries ago; but it first attracted See also:European See also:capital in 1840.
