KALKAS, or KHALKKAS , a Mongoloid See also:people mainly concentrated in the See also:northern See also:steppes of See also:Mongolia near their kinsmen, the See also:Buriats. According to See also:Sir H. Howorth they derive their name from the See also:river Kalka, which runs into the Buir See also:lake. Of all Mongolians they physically differ most from the true Mongol type (see See also:MONGOLS). Their See also:colour is a See also:brown rather than a yellow, and their eyes are open and not oblique. They have, however, the broad See also:flat See also:face, high cheekbones and lank See also:black See also:hair of their See also:race. They number some 250,000, and their territory is divided into the four khanates of Tushetu (Tushiyetu), Tsetien (Setzen), Sai'noi'm (Sain Noyan) and Jesaktu (Jassaktu).
