KANAKA , a Polynesian word meaning " See also:

man," used by Polynesians to describe themselves. Its ethnical value, never See also:great, has been entirely destroyed by. its indiscriminate use by the See also:French to describe all See also:South See also:Sea islanders, whether See also:black or See also:brown. The corrupt French See also:form canaque has been used by some See also:English writers. The See also:term came into prominence in 1884–1885 in connexion with the scandals arising over the kidnap-ping of South Sea islanders for enforced labour on the See also:sugar plantations of See also:north See also:Queensland.
