He studied See also:medicine in the university of his native See also:town, and in 1831 he became assistant in the chemical See also:schools. He pursued the study of See also:chemistry in See also:Paris, See also:Berlin and See also:Giessen, and was subsequently engaged in teaching the See also:science at See also:Ghent and See also:Liege. In 1856 he was appointed See also:professor of chemistry in the Liege University, and he retained this See also:post until the See also:close of his See also:life. About the See also:year 1835 he began to devote his leisure to the investigation of the Carboniferous fossils around Liege, and ultimately he became distinguished for his researches onthe palaeontology of the Palaeozoic rocks, and especially for his descriptions of the See also:mollusca, brachiopods, See also:crustacea and crinoids of the Carboniferous See also:limestone of See also:Belgium. In recognition of this See also:work the See also:Wollaston See also:medal was awarded to him in 1875 by the See also:Geological Society of See also:London, and in 1876 he was appointed professor of palaeontology at Liege.
