KONIGSWINTER , a See also:

town and summer resort of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:province, on the right See also:bank of the Rhine, 24 M. S.S.E. of See also:Cologne by the railway to See also:Frankfort-on-See also:Main, at the See also:foot of the See also:Siebengebirge. Pop. (1905), 3944• The romantic Drachenfels (Ioio ft.), crowned by the ruins of a See also:castle built See also:early in the 12th See also:century by the See also:archbishop of Cologne, rises behind the town. From the See also:summit, to which there is a funicular railway, there is a magnificent view, celebrated by See also:Byron in Childe Harold's See also:Pilgrimage. A See also:cave in the See also:hill is said to have sheltered the See also:dragon which was slain by the See also:hero Siegfried. The See also:mountain is quarried, and from 1267 onward supplied See also:stone (See also:trachyte) for the See also:building of Cologne See also:cathedral. The castle of Drachenburg, built in 1883, is on the See also:north See also:side of the hill. Konigswinter has a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and an Evangelical See also:church, some small manufactures and a little See also:shipping. It has a See also:monument to the poet, Wolfgang See also:Muller. Near the town are the rains of the See also:abbey of Heisterbach.
