For several years Lalo led a modest and retired existence, playing the See also:viola in the quartet party organized by Armingaud and See also:Jacquard, and in composing chamber See also:music. His See also:early See also:works include two trios, a quartet, and several pieces for violin and See also:pianoforte. This See also:work was accepted for See also:production at the Paris Opera, but delays occurred, and nothing was done. Fiesque was next offered to the See also:Theatre de la Monnaie, See also:Brussels, and was about to be produced there when the manager became bankrupt. He had begun a new opera, but had, only written the first See also:act when, on the 23rd of See also:April 1892, he died. This opera, La See also:Jacquerie, was finished by See also:Arthur Coquard, and was produced in 1895 at See also:Monte Carlo, See also:Aix-See also:les-Bains and finally in Paris. Lalo had distinct originality, discernible in hisemployment of curious rhythmic devices. His music is ever ingenious and brilliantly effective. LA MADDALENA, an See also:island 22 M. from the N.E.
