In 1516 he received the See also:government of the Milanese, and by his severity made the French domination insupportable. In 1521 he succeeded in defending the duchy against the See also:Spanish See also:army, but in 1522 he was completely defeated at the See also:battle of the Bicocca, and was forced to evacuate the Milanese. The See also:mutiny of his Swiss troops had compelled him, against his wish, to engage in the battle. Created See also:marshal of See also:France, he received again, in 1527, the command of the army of See also:Italy, occupied the Milanese, and was then sent to undertake the See also:conquest of the See also:kingdom of See also:Naples. The defection of See also:Andrea See also:Doria and the See also:plague which See also:broke out in the French See also:camp brought on a fresh disaster. Lautrec himself caught the infection, and died on the 15th of See also:August 1528. He had the reputation of a gallant and able soldier, but this reputation scarcely seems to be justified by the facts; though he was always badly used by See also:fortune.
