LUCERA , a See also:town and episcopal see of See also:Apulia, See also:Italy, 121 M. W.N.W. by See also:rail of See also:Foggia. Pop. (Igor) 16,962. It is situated upon a lofty See also:plateau, the highest point of which (823 ft.), projecting to the W., was the See also:ancient citadel, and is occupied by the well-preserved See also:castle erected by See also:Frederick II., and rebuilt by See also:Pierre d'Angicourt about 1280. The See also:cathedral, originally Romanesque, but restored after 1300 is in the See also:Gothic See also:style; the See also:facade is See also:good, and so is the See also:ciborium. The interior was restored in 1882. The town occupies the site of the ancient Luceria, the See also:key of the whole See also:country. According to tradition the See also:temple of See also:Minerva, founded by Diomede, contained the Trojan See also:Palladium, and the town struck numerous See also:bronze coins; but in See also:history it is first heard of as on the See also:Roman See also:side in the Samnite See also:Wars (321 B.C.), and in 315 or 314 B.C. a Latin See also:colony was sent here. It is mentioned in subsequent military history, and its position on the road from Beneventum, via Aecae (mod. Troja) to Sipontum, gave it some importance. Its See also:wool was also renowned. It now contains no ancient remains above ground, though several See also:mosaic pavements have been found and there are traces of the See also:foundations of an See also:amphitheatre outside the town on the E. See also:Lat. ix. 75). In 663 it was destroyed by See also:Constans II., and was only restored in 1223 by Frederick II., who transported 20,000 See also:Saracens hither from See also:Sicily.
