MIRZAPUR , a See also:

city and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Benares See also:division of the See also:United Provinces. The city is on the right See also:bank of the See also:Ganges; a station on the See also:East See also:Indian railway, about See also:half-way between See also:Allahabad and Benares, 509 M. N.W. from See also:Calcutta. Pop. (1901), 79,862. The See also:river front, lined with See also:stone See also:ghats or flights of stairs, mosques, See also:Hindu temples and dwelling-houses of the wealthier merchants, is handsome; but the interior of the See also:town is mainly composed of mud huts. Formerly it was the See also:emporium of See also:trade between central India and See also:Bengal, which has now been diverted to the See also:railways. It has See also:European and native See also:lace factories, and manufactures See also:brass vessels and woollen carpets. The See also:London See also:Mission manages a high school and an orphanage. The municipal limits include the town of Bind-hachal, an important centre of See also:pilgrimage, with the See also:shrine of Vindhyeshwari. The DISTRICT OF MIRZAPUR extends into the See also:Sone valley. See also:Area, 5238 sq. m.

It is crossed from east to See also:

west by the See also:Vindhya and Kaimur ranges. A central jungly See also:plateau connects these and separates the valley of the Ganges from that of the Sone. The See also:part See also:north of the Vindhyas is highly cultivated and thickly peopled, but the See also:rest of the district consists largely of ravines and forests with a sparse See also:population. The population in 1901 was 1,082,430, showing a decrease of 6.8 % in the See also:decade. The district comprises a large part of the hereditary domains of the See also:raja of. Benares, which are See also:revenue-See also:free. It is traversed, near the Ganges, by the See also:main See also:line of the East Indian railway. The See also:Great See also:Southern road used to start from the city.
