In 184o he established a See also:stationery and See also:book-selling business in Bloomsbury, See also:London. He was the first publisher of See also:James See also:Russell See also:Lowell's poems in See also:England, and of See also:Emerson's See also:Man Thinking. In 1842 he began to lend books. This See also:department proved so successful that in 1852 he moved his " Select Library " to larger premises in New See also:Oxford See also:Street, London. In 186o these premises were substantially enlarged, and branches of the business established, and in 1864 " Mudie's was converted into a limited See also:company. Mudie himself died on the 28th of October 189o.
