NEUSTRIA , the old name given to the western See also:kingdom of the See also:Franks, as opposed to the eastern kingdom, See also:Austrasia (q.v.). The most See also:ancient See also:form of the word is Niuster, from niust, which would make the word signify the " most See also:recent " See also:con-quests of the Franks. The word Neustria does not appear as See also:early as the Historia Francorum of See also:Gregory of See also:Tours, but is found for the first See also:time in Fredegarius. The kingdom of See also:Chilperic was retrospectively given this name, and in contemporary usage it was given to the kingdom of See also:Clovis II., as opposed to that of See also:Sigebert III., the two sons of Dagobert; and after that, the princes reigning in the See also:West were called See also:kings of Neustria, and those reigning in the See also:East, kings of Austrasia. Under the new Carolingian See also:dynasty, See also:Pippin and See also:Charlemagne restored the unity of the Frankish See also:realm, and then the word Neustria was restricted to the See also:district between the See also:Loire and the See also:Seine, together with See also:part of the See also:diocese of See also:Rouen See also:north of the Seine; while Austrasiacomprised only the Frankish dominions beyond the See also:Rhine, perhaps with the addition of the three cities of See also:Mainz, See also:Worms and See also:Spires on the See also:left See also:bank. The districts between Neustria and Austrasia were called See also:Media See also:Francia or simply Francia. In 843 See also:Brittany took from Neustria the countships of See also:Rennes and See also:Nantes; and gradually the See also:term Neustria came to be restricted to the district which was later called See also:Normandy, See also:Dudo of See also:Saint Quentin, who flourished about the See also:year 1000, gives the name Neustria to the lands ceded to Rollo and his followers during the loth See also:century. In the year 1663, the Pere de Moustier gave to his See also:work on the churches and abbeys of Normandy the See also:title of Neustria pia. At the time of Charlemagne, See also:Lombardy was divided into five provinces: Neustria, Austrasia, Aemilia, Littoraria marls and Tuscia. Austrasia was the name given to eastern Lombardy, and Neustria that given to western Lombardy, the part last occupied by the See also:Lombards. See F.
