NIEDERWALD , a broad See also:

hill in See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hesse-See also:Nassau, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Rhine, between that See also:river and the Wisper, opposite See also:Bingen, forming the See also:south-western See also:apex of the See also:Taunus range. Its See also:summit is clothed with dense forests of See also:oak and See also:beech, while its See also:southern and western sides, which descend sharply to See also:Rudesheim and See also:Assmannshausen on the Rhine, are covered with vineyards, and produce some of the finest wines of the See also:district. At the edge of the See also:forest, on the See also:crest of the hill above Rudesheim, stands the gigantic " Germania " statue, the See also:national See also:monument of the See also:war of 1870-71, which was unveiled on the 28th of See also:September 1883 by the See also:emperor See also:William I., in the presence of all the rulers in Germany or their representatives. It was designed by Johannes Schilling, and the See also:bronze figure of Germania is 33 ft. high; the See also:pedestal is adorned with allegorical figures and portraits of See also:German princes and generals.
