RUDESHEIM , a See also:

town of See also:Germany in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:province on the right See also:bank of the Rhine, 19 m. S.W. of See also:Wiesbaden by the See also:main See also:line from See also:Frankfort-on-Main to See also:Cologne. Pop. (1905) 4773. Its situation, at the See also:lower end of the famous vineyard See also:district of the Rheingau, opposite See also:Bingen and just above the romantic See also:gorge of the Rhine, renders it a popular tourist centre. Behind the town rises the majestic See also:Niederwald (985 ft.), on the See also:crest of which stands the See also:national See also:monument, " Germania," commemorating the See also:war of 1870-71. Rtidesheim has some interesting towers. The Bromserburg, or Niederburg, a massive structure built in the 13th See also:century, formerly belonging to the archbishops of See also:Mainz; the Boosenburg, or Oberburg, which was rebuilt in 1868, with the exception of the keep; the Adlerturm, a relic of the fortifications of the town; and the Vorderburg, the remains of an old See also:castle. The See also:Gothic See also:church of St See also:James has some interesting paintings and monuments, and there is also a See also:Protestant church. The town has See also:electrical See also:works, but its See also:industries are mainly concerned with the preparation of See also:wine, the best kinds being Rudesheimer See also:Berg, Hinterhaus and Rottland. See J, P. Schmelzeis, Rudesheim See also:im Rheingau (Rudesheim, 1881); and Heiderlinden, Rudesheim and See also:seine Umgebung (Rudesheim, 1888).
