In 1826 he joined the See also:staff of the See also:Journal See also:des Debats, but subsequently transferred his See also:pen to the See also:National. Under the See also:empire he was inspector-See also:general of See also:education (1852) and director of the Ecole normale (1857–1867). His See also:literary reputation was effectually established by his Histoire de la litterature francaise (1844–1861), which secured his See also:election to the See also:Academy (185o). His other See also:works include Etudes d'histoire et de litterature (1859–1864), and See also:Les Quatres grands historiens latins (1895). In all his books he vigorously supported the claims of classicism against romanticism. He died at See also:San Remo on the 27th of March 1888.
