OAMARU , a municipal See also:

borough on the See also:east See also:coast of See also:South See also:Island, New See also:Zealand, in the See also:county of Waitaki and provincial See also:district of Otago; on the See also:main railway between See also:Christchurch (152 M. N.E.) and See also:Dunedin (78 m. S.S.W.). Pop. (1906) 5071. It is the outlet of the largest agricultural district in New Zealand. A See also:breakwater and See also:mole, constructed of blocks of See also:concrete. enclose a commodious See also:basin, forming one of the safest harbours in the See also:colony. The export of frozen See also:meat is important. The See also:town is built of See also:white Oamaru See also:limestone. See also:Brown See also:coal is obtained at the entrance of Shag valley, 40 M. S. The district is famed for its stock, and the See also:fine quality of its See also:grain; also for the See also:character of the See also:English See also:grasses laid down there, which flourish in a See also:rich See also:black See also:loam on a limestone formation.
