ONEIDA , a See also:

city of See also:Madison See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., on Oneida See also:Creek, about 6 m. S.E. of Oneida See also:Lake, about 26 m. W. of See also:Utica, and about 26 m. E.N.E. of See also:Syracuse. Pop. (1890) 6083; (1900) 6364, of whom 784 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (191c, U.S. See also:census) 8317. It is served by the New York Central & See also:Hudson See also:River, the New York, See also:Ontario & Western, the See also:West See also:Shore and the Oneida (electric) See also:railways (the last connecting with Utica and Syracuse), and by the See also:Erie See also:Canal. The city lies about 440 ft. above the See also:sea on a level site. Across Oneida Creek, to the See also:south-See also:east, in Oneida county, is the See also:village of Oneida See also:Castle (pop. in 1910, 393), situated in the township of See also:Vernon (pop. in 1910, 3197), and the former gathering See also:place of the Oneida See also:Indians, some of whom still live in the township of Vernon and in the city of Oneida. In the south-eastern See also:part of the city is the headquarters of the Oneida Community (q.v.), which controls important See also:industries here, at See also:Niagara Falls, and elsewhere. Immediately west of Oneida is the village of Wampsville (incorporated in 1908), the county-seat of Madison county. Among the manufactures of Oneida are wagons, cigars, See also:furniture, caskets, See also:silver-plated See also:ware, engines and machinery, See also:steel and wooden pulleys and chucks, steel See also:grave vaults, See also:hosiery, and See also:milk See also:bottle caps.

In the vicinity the Oneida Community manufactures chains and See also:

animal traps. The site of Oneida was See also:purchased in 1829–1830 by Sands See also:Higinbotham, in See also:honour of whom one of the municipal parks (the other is See also:Allen See also:Park) is named. Oneida was incorporated as a village in 1848 and chartered as a city in 1901.
