ORFORD , a small See also:

town, once of greater importance, in the See also:south-eastern See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Suffolk, See also:England, See also:ORGAN 21 M. E. by N. of See also:Ipswich. Pop. (1901) 987. It lies by the right See also:bank of the See also:river Alde, where that river flows south-See also:west-See also:ward on the inner See also:side of the See also:great See also:beach which has blocked its See also:direct outflow to the See also:sea, and swells out seaward in the See also:blunt promontory of Orford Ness. The See also:church of St See also:Bartholomew is of much See also:interest. It retains a ruined See also:Norman See also:chancel of See also:rich and unusual See also:design, while the See also:body of the church is Decorated. Of Orford See also:castle the keep remains, See also:standing high on a See also:mound; it is partly of See also:Caen See also:stone and partly of flintwork, and is of Norman date.
