OSTERODE , a See also:

town in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, at the See also:south See also:foot of the Harz Mountains, 34 M. N.W. of See also:Nordhausen by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 7467. The See also:church of St Aegidius (Evangelical), founded in 724 and rebuilt after a See also:fire in 1578, contains some See also:fine tombs of the See also:dukes of See also:Brunswick-Grubenhagen, who made Osterode their See also:residence froju 1361 to 1452. Other buildings are the fine town-See also:hall and the See also:hospital. There are manufactures of See also:cotton and woollen goods, cigars and See also:leather, and tanneries, dyeworks and See also:gypsum quarries. In See also:recent years Osterode has become celebrated as a See also:health resort.
