OSTERSUND , a See also:

town of See also:Sweden, See also:capital of the See also:district (lan) of Jemtland, on the See also:east See also:shore of Storsjo (See also:Great See also:Lake), 364 M. N. by W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail. Pop. (Igloo) 6866. It lies at an See also:elevation of about r000 ft. and is the See also:metropolis of a mountainous and beautiful district. Immediately facing the town is the lofty See also:island of Fros, with which it is connected by a See also:bridge 1148 ft. See also:long. A runic See also:stone commemorates the See also:building of a bridge hereby a See also:Christian missionary, Austmader, son of Gudfast. Ostersund was founded in 1786. It has a considerable See also:trade in See also:timber, and a See also:local trade by. steamers on Storsjo. See also:Electricity is obtained for See also:lighting and other purposes by utilizing the abundant See also:water-See also:power in the district.
