OTTUMWA , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Wapello county, See also:Iowa, U.S.A., on both sides of the See also:Des Moines See also:river, in the S.E. See also:part of the See also:state, about 85 m. S.E. of Des Moines. Pop. (1900) 18,197, of whom 1759 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910 See also:census) 22,012. It is served by the See also:Chicago, See also:Burlington & See also:Quincy, the Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & See also:Saint See also:Paul, the Chicago, See also:Rock See also:Island & Pacific, and the See also:Wabash See also:railways. The site on which it is built forms a See also:succession of terraces receding farther and farther from the river. In the city are a See also:Carnegie library, a city See also:hospital and St See also:Joseph's See also:Academy. Ottumwa is the headquarters of the Ottumwa See also:Division of the See also:Southern Federal Judicial See also:District of Iowa, and terms of See also:United States District and See also:Circuit courts are held there. The city is in one of the richest See also:coal regions of the state, and ranks high as a manufacturing centre, pork-packing, and the manufacture of See also:iron and See also:steel, machinery and agricultural and See also:mining implements being the leading See also:industries. The value of the factory product in 1905 was $10,374,183, an increase of 19.5% since 1900. Ottumwa was first settled in 1843i was incorporated as a See also:town in 1851, and first chartered as a city in 1857.
