city of Passaic See also:county, New See also:Jersey, U.S.A., at the See also:head of See also:navigation on the Passaic See also:river, 5 M. SS.E. of See also:Paterson. (Pop. (189o), 13,028; (1900), 27,777, of whom 12,900 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910 See also:census), 54,773. Passaic is served by the See also:Erie and the See also:Delaware, Lackawana & Western See also:railways. The See also:east See also:part of the city is a See also:plain occupied chiefly by factories, for which See also:water-See also:power is furnished by the river and a See also:canal; the See also:west part, which is almost wholly residential, extends over hills which command excellent views. Among the See also:principal buildings are the city See also:hall, and the Jane See also:Watson See also:Reid Memorial Library. The city's factory products increased in value from $12,804,805 in 190o to $22,782,725 in 1905, or 77.9%. About one-See also:half of the value in 1905 was in worsteds, cottons and woollens; other important manufactures are See also:rubber goods and See also:electrical supplies. There are large vineyards near the city. A See also:settlement was established here by the Dutch in 1679, and was called Acquackanonk or Paterson Landing until the See also:middle of the loth See also:century. Passaic was incorporated as a See also:village in 1869, and in 1873 was chartered as a city.
