It was noted from See also:early times for its See also:temple and See also:oracle of See also:Apollo, and, as the See also:port of Xanthus and other towns of the same valley, had a large See also:trade, and was regarded as the See also:metropolis of See also:Lycia. Enlarged by See also:Ptolemy Philadelphus I. and renamed for a See also:time See also:Arsinoe, it was adorned by See also:Vespasian with See also:baths. St See also:Paul changed there into a " See also:ship of See also:Phoenicia " on his way to See also:Jerusalem in A.D. 6o. Patara was the reputed See also:birth-See also:place of St See also:Nicholas. The See also:principal extant monuments are a triple triumphal See also:arch, with inscription, through which ran the road to Xanthus, and the walls, discernible on either See also:hand of it; the See also:theatre, 265 ft. in See also:diameter, built in A.D. 145 (as attested by an inscription) and wonderfully well preserved, though largely filled with See also:drift See also:sand; and the thermae built by, Vespasian See also:north of the See also:harbour.
