Pop. (1900) 152. Roncesvalles is famous in See also:history and See also:legend for the defeat of See also:Charlemagne and the See also:death of See also:Roland (q.v.) in 778. The small collegiate See also:church contains several curious See also:relics associated with Roland, and is a favourite See also:place of See also:pilgrimage. The See also:battle is said to have been fought in the picturesque valley known as Val See also:Carlos, which is now occupied by a See also:hamlet bearing the same name, and in the adjoining See also:defile of Ibaneta. Both of these are traversed by the See also:main road leading See also:north from Roncesvalles to St See also:Jean Pied de See also:Port, in See also:France.
