SAN SEVERO , a See also:city in See also:Apulia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Foggia, from which it is 17 M. N.N.W. by See also:rail. Pop. (19o1) 28,550. San Severo lies at the See also:foot of the spurs of See also:Monte See also:Gargano, 292 ft. above See also:sea-level. It is the see of a See also:bishop (since r58o), and has some remains of its old fortifications. San Severo See also:dates from the See also:middle ages. It was laid in ruins by See also:Frederick II., and in 1053 was the See also:scene of a victory by See also:Robert Guiscard over the papal troops under See also:Leo IX. In 1799 the See also:town was taken by the See also:French and again almost entirely destroyed. The over-lordship was held in See also:succession by the See also:Benedictines of the See also:abbey of Torre See also:Maggiore, the Knights See also:Templars, the See also:crown of See also:Naples and the Sangro See also:family (commendatories of Torre Maggiore). In 1627, 1828 and 1851 the town suffered from earthquakes. SAN-SHUI, a treaty See also:port in the province of Kwang-tung, See also:China, on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:West See also:river, 99 M. from See also:Canton, opened to See also:foreign See also:trade in 1897.

North and West See also:rivers, and it is favourably situated as a distributing centre for foreign goods. Two lines of steamers converge at San-shui, from Canton and Hong-See also:Kong respectively. The town is surrounded by a handsome See also:wall built in the 16th See also:century, but within this rampart the houses are mean. The foreign trade shows little signs of expansion. In 1902 the See also:net foreign imports amounted in value to £474,175, and in 1904 to only £380,000, while the exports during the same two years amounted to £225,000 and £317,000 respectively. The See also:direct foreign trade in 1908 was £507,827. There is a large See also:junk See also:traffic, and the See also:local likin station is one of the richest in the province.
