He does not appear at this See also:time to have been seriously punished, and at the beginning of 1401 he is found in See also:London, where his See also:preaching again attracted the See also:notice of the ecclesiastical authorities. The See also:statute De haeretico comburendo had just been introduced for the purpose of stamping out heresy, but it had not become See also:law when Sawtrey was summoned to St See also:Paul's and was charged with denying See also:transubstantiation, with refusing to adore the See also:cross except as a See also:symbol, and with six other heresies. He defended himself ably against See also:Archbishop See also:Thomas See also:Arundel, but in See also:February he was condemned and was degraded from the priesthood. Being the first Lollard to be put to See also:death he was burned at St Paul's Cross in See also:March 1401.
