SUNDSVALL , a seaport of See also:

Sweden in the See also:district (lan) of Vesternorrland, on a wide See also:bay of the Baltic, at the See also:north of the Seianger See also:River, 36o m. N. by W. of See also:Stockholm, the See also:terminus of a See also:branch from Ange on the See also:northern railway. Pop. (1900), 14,831. It was rebuilt in See also:brick and See also:stone after a destructive See also:fire in 1888. In the See also:town and its vicinity are numerous See also:steam saw-See also:mills, besides See also:wood-pulp factories, steelworks, brickworks, See also:engineering shops, breweries and joineries, but Sundsvall owes its See also:chief importance to its export See also:trade in See also:timber (6 to 7 million cub. ft. annually), the bulk of which goes to See also:Germany, See also:France and See also:Great See also:Britain. It also exports wood-pulp, See also:iron and See also:fish. There is a See also:special trade with See also:Finland. The See also:harbour, which is usually closed by See also:ice from about the See also:middle of See also:December to the second See also:week in May, is sheltered against the See also:east winds by a See also:group of islands.
